Can the Canon 400D Record Video? (2026 EOS-MovRec Guide)
We would rather tell you the truth than sell you hope: this page’s answer is no. Read on for the reason — it takes two minutes and will save you a wasted afternoon of trying.
Quick answer: No. The Canon 400D (Digital Rebel XTi, released 2006) has no Live View hardware. EOS Camera Movie Record works by capturing the camera’s Live View signal over USB and saving it to your computer — with no Live View signal to capture, the method cannot work on this body. No setting, driver, or software trick changes that.
The Verdict
| Live View | No |
| Native video recording | No |
| EOS-MovRec compatibility | No — hardware limitation |
| Battery | NB-2LH (stills shooting only) |
Why It Can’t Work
EOS-MovRec is not a firmware hack — it never modifies the camera. It simply reads the Live View stream the camera already sends over USB. That stream only exists on bodies with Live View hardware, and the 400D does not have it.
Live View arrived on Canon DSLRs with the professional EOS-1D Mark III and reached enthusiast bodies with the EOS 40D and 450D in 2007–2008. The 400D was released in 2006, before any of that. Look at the back of a 400D: the screen shows menus and image review, and nothing else — it can never display a live sensor feed, because the hardware for it is not there. Software cannot capture a signal that does not exist.
If a forum post or video claims otherwise, it is describing a different camera — most likely the 450D, whose name looks confusingly similar.
Your Options (the Honest Ones)
- Pick up a used 450D or 1000D. Both are cheap on the used market, both have Live View, and both work with EOS-MovRec. Start with our Canon 450D video guide and the Canon 1000D video guide.
- Move to a body with native video. If you would rather record 1080p without a computer attached, any Canon DSLR with a movie mode does it — our Canon 550D video guide is a good starting point.
- What about using the 400D as a webcam, or for timelapse? Still no — and it is worth saying plainly. Webcam streaming and Live-View-based timelapse need the same Live View signal that is not there. The 400D remains a perfectly good stills camera; keep a spare NB-2LH battery in the bag and keep shooting photos.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the Canon 400D record video at all?
No. It has no movie mode, and EOS Camera Movie Record cannot add one — the method needs Live View hardware, which the 400D lacks.
Can I install Magic Lantern on the 400D instead?
No. Magic Lantern does not support the 400D (nor the 350D or 30D) — it only runs on bodies with newer firmware platforms.
Is there any software workaround at all?
No. This is a hardware limitation, not a software one. No app, driver, or hack can create a Live View signal the sensor pipeline cannot produce.
What is the cheapest Canon DSLR that works with EOS-MovRec?
A used EOS 450D or 1000D — both have Live View and both are inexpensive second-hand. See our 450D guide and 1000D guide.
Can I at least use my 400D as a webcam?
No. Webcam use needs the same Live View feed, so the same hardware limitation applies.
